a bit cooler and a shift in my harvest

It was cool by my standards today, upper 50's F (15 C) and so my idea of what to collect changes, as does what to cook.
a red cabbage, Swiss Chard and then the normal assortment of my favorite summertime vegetables.
The rain was wonderful yesterday, but we need more.
A little Alsatian comfort food for tonight, pair what i picked with some Kielbasa.

Garden visitor

At this moment,
the garden is full of flowers,
but from the herbs i have,
not from the flowering plants.
They are not as "pretty" as the others,
but apparently,
delicious.

Someone i had not seen before,
visited
and enjoyed an afternoon snack.
He (she?) was feasting on the cinnamon basil in full flower!
I think this mosquito hawk,
everyone else knows them as dragonflies,
but the eat quite a few time their weight in mosquitoes
and because of them,
i have not been bitten once!

a gift to give

She had been by before,
looking at what was in the garden.
She had run quickly away,
not understanding what I said,
fearing i would be angry.
Today she was there again
and i held out some fresh mint
and she understood.
She spoke a broken creole,
so i would not understand her desires,
but i could see in her eyes.
fennel, mint, cilantro which had gone to seed and basil,
all were offered
and she then blessed me,
i am good with that.

garden life

walking though the tall, green, mint,
releasing an aroma that is so wonderful.
I must cut some of it,
for it does take over,
yet the flowers of other plants still stick out,
proudly in colors and shapes that are vibrant,
at the very least.
My dread and anticipation have lessened,
at least now, till the next visit,
which will be in a few weeks,
then perhaps more answers,
but the most serious of concerns have been relieved.
So I enjoy the smells and the sights,
the night blooming cereus treated me the other night,
the day lilies during the day.
Herbs and vegetables abound,
I pick them daily!
Squash flowers for fritters,
tomatoes and basil and arugula and chives and parsley and cilantro, of course, mint.
Red raspberries and potatoes and celery.
The cucumbers, not yet.
The early peas are late,
bok choy and red cabbage are growing
and lettuce is being harvested daily.
All is good.

Beautiful day

I was cleaning up the garden,
since it is the time for me to do such things.
I believed that the harvest was finished'
save a few green tomatoes.
But the cucumbers,
which had not done well
(saying i got 3 for the entire season),
had surprises for me!

It seems i would rather clean a garden,
than almost anything else!
The exception might me cooking!

Tomorrow i will post 2 recipes that i work with green tomatoes.

Positive

Bright sun shine,
makes my heart glad.
So does the cool breeze on my uncovered back.
Working the garden,
i see the things i planned come to fruition,
so to speak.
The anise flowers blooming so strongly,
attracting and feeding the legions of wasps,
Who tend my garden,
removing the pests that would do it harm.
They do not bother me.
The cabbage, which had almost been destroyed by caterpillars,

is back after the wasps removed the pests for their young.
My "alternative" control works well.

feeling better

It seemed like weeks and months of gloom,
but it was only a short while.
Scallion flower
Lots of rain.
Beautiful out - cool, sunny, nice!

Illness, mostly passed
and now we have construction in the house!

Things that long need help are being finished
and this is very, very good.
Snow pea flower

Meanwhile the garden flourishes.
lettuce, peas , herbs, flowers!

week 3 - the last week

The roses with what is replacing them - more roses!

After hving a wonderful/terible week,
the roses still have an intense, wonderful odor, but are finishing.
They take my mind off the terrible (namely work).
They are being replaced by things with out odor, but are beautiful

a small daisy-like wild flower i have let take over

another wild rose - without odor

week 2

 The second week,
 more intense than the first,
attracting the pollenators,
such a bounty to enjoy!
and the humans!
The wild roses come,

soon the pink wild roses will come,
but not quite yet...

Medicine man

well not really.
As my garden begins to fade, it find i am left with the seeds and leaves of some of the plants that have been traditionally used for medicine.
Anise -the seeds with a strong licorice flavor, was traditionally brewed as a tea to calm a stomach and relieve mild respiratory distress in Greece.  My mother passed that on to me and i use it.
The chemistry of it also includes a high vitamin C contant and a mild laxitive.
Mint -Sperment especially is used in cooking all over the world, but makes a wonderfully relaxing tea and the chemistry - menthol relaxes lungs in small doses.
Dill - another wonderful spice, but looking at the seeds, i am seeing a possibility of some insecticidal properties - for flies!  Dead ones seem to be trapped in the mass of seeds as they dry.
My neighbors are ll excited as i collect and dry or procss each, because the history is well known for each of them.

The Garden spring 2011

We are 3 weeks ahead and have already experienced summer-type weather, but today it is back to spring with a coolness surrounding the yard.
A green wall now surrounds my quiet space on our front porch.
We were going to close it in, but this living wall is much better.

This is my place of quiet...

Our borders are kept safe by a wall of roses,
briefly the small wild white ones take over the neighborhood with their scent.
The Rose and the bleeding heart are some of those treasures we find...

There is a garden this early spring, with vegetables becoming ready.

And in the quiet shade, a calalilly prepares its blossoms, with a rose to encourage them.

For Erin:  I have not forsaken your blog, but i am unable to post due to some technical glitch.

Comparisons

I seem to have gotten much more "reflective" since my adventure started.
I think this is a good thing, it lets me stop and notice things around me and in me.
Up not as early as Saturday,
there was no breeze, but the air was damp and cool.
Starlings and sparrows were squawking at each other,
but the morning doves soothed that racket with gentle cooing .
A noise From someone some where, i could not see.
Ah the Italian neighbor,
working in her garden across the street,
wearing black because her husband recently passed, he was 93.
She is what i think of as a typical Italian, she shares from the bounty of her garden with her neighbors.
She is mostly quiet in the morning, but always working in the garden.
It is a good morning to be quiet on.
I notice that my favorite rose, the wild white one that smells so intensely , but only blooms for one week is beginning to bloom its small white flowers.
The Irises are incredible now and the peas I planted early are blooming!

That these are blooming is good, I had forgotten that the garden was unattended from July on last year, so i am no longer surprised at the number of weeds that exist along side these beauties. It is a lot of work.
The vision i currently have is giving me fits.
At times with the glasses on, i can not keep my balance.
This makes working in the garden more than a challenge.
I have killed some plants by stumbling around.
I noticed that when my eyes are tired, there are double images, they are reversed, meaning that things are getting better. This in of it self seems strange to me as i would think that it would be when i was rested that the eyes would be better, as they seem to be by where the double images are.
I just know there are changes and as difficult as they make things, it is okay.

What a day

The whole of Stamford and Darien was out to get me today!
Because of the work, I could not leave until 2 PM and I really needed to leave at 1:30.
There is no one else to do the work and it is important for everyone's health.
It is something I need to work on, but I do not see my options.
Things are breaking open tho...I have to wonder if my dad is around whispering in my ear about all that weirdness feelings, he was the financial wizard, but the feeling really have nothing to do with money.
It all has to do with attitude. If you look at the stock market it is run by a few forces, one is greed and we all know about that, it usually gets us no where fast, especially our spiritual part.
Then there is the other portion which is either hope or the lack of it. Hope infiltrates people and "powers" and creates a better attitude. The lack of it creates despair. Hope defeats a lot of evil.
When the "tea party expose'" broadcast from comedy central, I laughed and felt sorry for those deluded people, who seemingly where happier that already rich, greedy people took their savings, but it was not okay to help the "least of these", the ones who were losing the little they had. Strange attitude.
So Ricardo and Matthew, don't get your money hopes up, but hope is looking up and it might help in that area also.

The final is a picture especially for Libby, the weeds in the picture are catnip, which took over a large part of the garden. The neighborhood cats are happy, but i am not! It seems that catnip is actually harder to get rid of than pernicious mint, which at least has a purpose for me and can be enjoyed by me.
