The power of blogging

Note,
i did not say the importance
or the fun,
but the power...why?
I have been blogging now more than 8 years
and in those 8 years,
i have connected with people from all over the world.
Again, note, i said connected,
because that is what blogging does,
we share a part of us when we blog,
we write or interests,
our desires,
our questions
and, most importantly,
our hearts.
Facebooks,
twitter,
instagram,
and even google +,
have all come
and they are fun
and allow us to see many pieces,
but they are not intimately showing someones heart.
Some use the various blogs,
to promote business
and sponsor items they like,
it still shows heart.
So i engage in all of the above,
but i always come back to blogging,
it is that important.

a little liteness

As i struggled today with work,
mistakes evident only to me,
but only because no one else knows or cares...
I had some light hearted face book discussion
with a blogger and food blogger (foodie if you must).
No i will not go there,
my reviews here maybe on the positive and negative of how people handle things,'but rarely a real restaurant review.
Why?
I cook and form those who taste and eat my food (not just the captive audience in my house),
i do a darn good job.
I have a strange background - grew up in Texas with the smoked beef and Tex-Mex food galore,
but it was also the South, so i was very familiar with things like collards and even gumbo.
Some how this adventure of mine awakened a sleeping giant deep down.
I grill and BBQ with the best of them.
Because it was Houston, seafood was plenty,
but then there is more to my heritage because my mom was Greek - and i can put together a mean Baklava at the very least
and mt dad was country French, growing up in Alsace - which has a German flair to it.
I can cook these
and as i said, if you take the word or others first,
I cook well.So if i go to a restaurant, i will compare to what i can do
and most times i am disappointed
because the restaurant must cook a high volume and things do get lost.
And then there is the issue of working at a Health Department for 33 years -
i know way too much.
I know the mistakes that are made and served. And i am an analyst - i can taste them.
So there will be no food/restaurant blog coming here,
instead go to OmNomCT for really good food / restaurant reviews.

and when a fire burns...

And so much for just blogging once a week, everyday something has sprung up and made me excited.
Tonight, Stamford Bloggers meet at Chinese Mirsch for a food drive.
This was a time I wish my mom was up here when we "downsized" her because she had over 6 transfile boxes of food in cans that were good (that is not to mention the box of items that were bad).
To find hope and light in the middle of things seems so rare and it is important to keep each spark burning.

What else?

The cool winds of autumn showed their face yesterday,
i saw the colors begin to change,
some reds
and oranges
and yellows.
Not much yet, for today it will be warm again,
but it is coming and the vibrant colors will fill mt soul,
hopefully with enough memory to last the bleak winter.

Past the annual

I as truly out of it on March 18th of this year, after those eye exercises and everything and totally missed my annual, I mean my first anniversary of blogging! Yes I started on March 18th, 2008 and it is all StamfordTalk's fault! Now i really did not get going well until May 10 (2 posts in March of 2008), but StamfordTalk did inspire me. Well i stand corrected, I did do an environmental post on March 5, 2008! Still, it was StamfordTalk who helped me understand the joys of blogging and then I found out just how important it was during my adventure, proceeding to blog as often as I could chronicling the long road from babbling idiot to sane man again.
It was beyond my expectations an extremely valuable tool in my recovery and along the way I picked up a number of people who I would call on line friends. the support has been real, the issues have been real. The stories have been incredible!
So for everyone who has every stopped by, read or left a comment or a prayer, I thank you.

A tough Monday

Today was a day of settling loose ends at least for a day. Tomorrow I go to New York to see the optometrist people and see what they say. I think I have mentioned that my reading glasses with the prisms are useless now, I see double the other way. By 11:30 Am, my eyes are beat and nothing seems right. The convergence of images in the morning is startling, just not total and so even more confusing than ever. There also has been a feeling like muscles waking up when they have fallen "asleep" in the back of my head. Each time this happens there seems to be more feeling back there. There has been no feeling for a long time and it feels strange to put my hand to the back of my head and not feel any thing.
Good night for another day.
I have been enjoying different posts, but am liking the painter of Stamford and some of the local scenes she has been doing.

Slightly down

I am dealing with a lot of emotion reading various posts, it is intense.
My mom is in a rehab facility for a couple of weeks and of course she doesn't answer her cell, making a little freaked out, but there is no reason for concern, besides the fall, nothing happened to her and the rest with people around her will do her good. Maybe she could do this every so often, not get hurt but get into a "transitional" facility for a week or so. I do not know what I am saying, that is kinda what would happen when she would come up here, I would take care of her, drive her around and she would not have to do anything. Every time except this last time, I could not take care of her, I was too weak. And it put a strain on her cause she wanted to take care of me, but could not. That is why she went home in November. It was stressful on her, she just could not say it.
Work is going, but I am getting really tired at the end of a half day. There is so much to do and I do not have a full energy to do it.
There is a lot more budget stuff going on and it puts pressure on my boss to have us do less. The other girl complains there is not enough to do and I feel overwhelmed. I do not like this at all.
Old familiar customers stop by saying they are glad i am back and bring water to be tested.
The State inspector wants to come down and inspect, I am not ready.
I am doing what is needed to insure that what ever report I generate will work with teh proper quality control. For every one test there are 5 or 6 control procedures to run, that is a lot of work.
I think I am rambling, so i will close down.

So what do I do in the morning?

I wake up, first! In many ways it is a wonderful feeling to feel the act of waking up (I remember times both before the surgery and after that waking up was nothing but a struggle).
I brew a coffee and then sit back in my bed drinking the coffee and trying my eye exercises (and there seems to be some improvement).
Some time during this time, I must use the facilities, then I get dressed, put on the reading glasses and start looking at the different new posts. Of course "Uncool" gets me laughing. Most of the time I can say something, but on occasion "Stamford Talks'" "Fancy Pancakes" post are beyond my experience and I am unable to add anything, funny, constructive or otherwise, as she posts about her pregnancy.
Then there are a variety of Stamford local issues, which are always of interest:
"Blog Stamford"
"StamfordCT"
"Streets of Stamford"
"Stamford, the place that Works?"
There are a few more and sometimes the info is duplicated, but still it keeps my fingers in things.
Then I usually go over with baited breathe to "Unloaded", hoping that there will be the final installment of the riveting "Bennington Girl" posts.
Usually I end up at " WingDangDo", who has a great wit about her, even when going through tragedy. She has made me cry a couple of times.
My final refreshment is with "Cogito Ergo Suma" with her art and "Really" and her movie and book reviews.
Most of these bloggers are from Stamford (all, I think) and it is a good way to get going, then I post something going on whether it is worthwhile to anyone but me doesn't matter. It is worthwhile to me and occasionally I am surprised by references and comments!
Then I have breakfast and work out for 15 minuted.
Then it is time for a 15 minute break and it is usually 10 or so and if David is home we get ready for a walk. If you see someone with a blond would cane walking the streets of Stamford, it really is not an unknown bum, it is me, a known bum...until next week!

The last day of the month!

The sun shines,
The birds sing,
The Robin hops,
In the Snow?

What the heck (yes, usually I talk thyis way, why I don't generally use stronger language is mysterious to me)! Yes I saw a Robin on my walk, hopping in the snow. And that was weird. Does it mean that we will have an early spring? Or that it was just a very confused Robin? Any way, I think this post did it. I posted every day for the entire month of January, not that it means much to any one else, but it has been a great outlet as I come to an end of my "Adventure!" The distance glasses are helping, I seem to have at least 3 hours more energy than I did when I was mostly seeing double. I still have to take a nap in the afternoon, but ths is so much better than it was!

How I see no lurking!

As you can read, I would rather be here at the computer writing than almost anything else, especially since I get to look at a 'single' image with the glasses on!
The other day was de-lurking day and i thought it was fun, but I really don't care if someone comes through and just browses for a bit and does not comment. However, I would like it if you show your face often, to one: put me on your followers list, just so i know who I might be talking to, I would still talk even if no one was reading (so I am not a exsibitionist, i will strip anyway, watching or not).
Two every so often, when I comment on your own blog, mention me (like Patty did)!
You can even link to me in a blog if you want!
Is this too much of a challenge?

I can not promise whitty one liners, nor a humeerous blog or a new painting everyday, but something will pop up!

Fun stuff

I have now been out of service for 6 months and the other day I get an email that I am being published again! This time it is on the beach closure policy we have in Stamford and I had forgotten it was out there. I think I submitted my last revision over a year ago, so the email confirmation was a surprise. Of course, I post all my bits of environmental wisdom, healthful hints and complaints on my other Blog site Joey K on the Environment. I got to put all my qualifications up and actually surprised myself (I think I still have this image of myself as just getting out of college or something). Anyway, it is out in April and I am pleased.

I have done it!

It being something StamfordTalk suggested in our first 'blog and grog' night. I moved my environmental posts to a new blog 'Joey K on the Environment' So all of you who want the environmental stuff separated from the cliff-hanging 'Adventure' series can go there to get your environmental fixes. You can also ask questions of me at JKuntz @ snet.net (no spaces). Have Fun

Therapy

I might call blogging my new therapy, it helps my mind say things that exist only in my heart, usually. Those who I have met (when I knew about, but had not yet embarked on my adventure), those who have responded to my prolific (I think) posting and those who I have read and lifted my spirits by either keeping me in the loop of downtown Stamford or keeping me laughing by your comical adventures (in person, I am a funny guy with dry wit, it just never reaches the written word except for one liners on other blogs). The interesting thing here in blogger land is that I feel like a complete amateur, especially after reading some of the profiles of some of you and just plain reading some of the postings. Lets face it there are a lot of writers, journalist and other professional people out here and I feel my ramblings are just that. At some point I will probably move my environmental info (were it is safe to say I am an expert) to a different blog (and of course there will be no comments on that site). My mobility at getting at an inside scoop of how government is very limited at this point (although I do get some info that would be better not to post). I certainly do not have a scoop on the comings and goings of restaurants anymore from either the Health Department perspective or the management perspective and some of you with real estate connections have much better info.
No this is not a swan song and some point I will be back at work (as soon as I can see straight again), but my adventure has gone on a lot longer than I would have ever dreamed.
So again, I thank all of you for your humor, words of encouragement, useful and useless information and poetry that has made me a better person during this long internment.

A little browsing

I did something insane yesterday when I was in my strange mood of low energy and frustration at not being able to really do anything (yes, a strange combo, but then I am). There are 420 people who have blogged and say they are from Stamford. Now there are a number of Stamfords in the world, but a number of blogs were from Connecticut. An awful lot were Asian, talking of various things that would not be of interest to me (Indian politics, religion, being pregnant and the like), but some were interesting: 'Really?' was a fun read, 'Blah Blog Blah - Thoughts That Don't Matter' actually has a following as a humor blog and one who apparently is following and knows something about the inner workings of the city 'Stamford, the place that works?' Of course, I did not realize that a number of people use this as a free advertisement for thier private buisness and some set-up a blog cause it was a school progect. ow I only went through about half of the 420 and most had one or two posts some time ago and then they stopped, some had no posts at all and I wonder if they were just starting. I Wonder if I had not had my adventure, with the time and the need, would I still post? Other blogs I liked '1000 Wise Women Coffee Chat' and that was another one with a following and 'Cogito Ergo Suma' a person who posts their iPod for sketching (Gad, I think I want one!), but she is good!
See what happens when you have a lot of time, are frustrated as all get out and have a computer?
I promise to review all of them and report back another day.
Oh one thing I will not do. there are a number of teens b logging and I will not be reporting n them.

More interesting musings

I had to step back and think a moment after my last post and I wondered why I was even phased by this whole uproar. Thank you for all your words of support, but there is even more reality going on here and anon got me to think.
First off the things I write about when it comes to health and environmental issues - I am the considered authority in Stamford on the subjects - The USEPA acknowledges it with the beaches, the State of CT acknowledges it for beaches and shellfish testing. They know I go beyond what I am supposed to. Area town and well persons and septic installers rely heavily on my expertise when it comes to tracking down bacteria pollution issue. All calls on bats and rabies get sent to the lab and most of the time me because I know what I am talking about. Insects are brought to me for ID and If I can't do it, I send them to the agricultural experiment station. I am the one who IDs bed bugs and ticks (I do not do the housing code portion of bed bugs). Well water people talk to me. I write the messages about such things on the Labs website. It is my voice talking about beach closures, shellfish bed status, mosquitoes and ticks on the Health Department Hot line.
I am not trying to be arrogant, but I have spent a long time to get as good as I am studying about each of these topics. I have great resources when I don't know the answer.
So for me to feel the least bit squeamish about writing about any of these is beyond ridiculous.

Where I go from here

How do I begin Tonights lecture....today there was an article in the Stamford Times about Stamford Bloggers, I was called into the office of the Health Director. It was a good meeting, but I was told I really should be writing about personal issues, rather than City issues. Well said, so I am writing about me and what I will and will not post.
1) I am an environmentalist - I will write about Long Island Sound and the fiasco that the USEPA has created.
2) I will talk about simple PUBLIC INFORMATION that is available through many other channels that I am involved with -they will be my opinions, not the opinions of the Health Department as is stated on the blog main page and there will be links to the public news releases.
These are the things most close to my heart - and I will warn people in any way I can about ticks, mosquitoes, bats, the general water quality.
3) I will not disclose any proprietary info like what the score of my favorite restaurant was in its last inspection.
4) I will not make any specific reference to personnel where I work.

All that said - I will continue to blog, I live in Stamford, I own property in Stamford, I do not use my city position for any purpose than to provide the citizens of Stamford the info for which I am paid.

I have removed or changed any posts that I think have not met these guidelines.

Otherwise it still is open season.

I believe in transparent government, that policy and procedure and above all information should be readily available and I actually believe Stamford's current mayor has done a fair job with this bringing the city's IT Department from the stone ages to something that is accessible and with the open meetings the he holds in various parts of the city. There is always room for improvement.
I am even more fervent in my belief of open scientific data. Many of our research reports are available on the city's website and much of this has been used by other government agencies to formulate policy (USGS, USEPA)
tho sadly they didn't use us as a reference, but they called on us for info many times.

So we let the games begin!

One final addition, if I am involved in any form of intervention as a private citizen, whether it involves other departments or the one I work in, I will post, because they have to do with me being a private citizen in Stamford, stepping in to try to help someone who is bewildered by the system that is government.
I believe this helps others know what can and cannot be done at a government level to help people!

You choose

I have a limited amount of time and 4 topics to cover
1) the end of the Patron Saint of Long Island Sound
2) The NEW Budget cut requests in Stamford, why and what they mean
3) The new/old Trend in city government - Robots in the personnel what it does
4) The real reason our food is not safe...a national topic
I want some voting on which shall be first and which last.
It will happen in the order that you all present!

I may need to do some changes based on new info that has come to me.
Some post I have deleted based on that info.
